Hotels in York | central location

As you will see on the map below, we are lucky to be one of the most centrally located York hotels, pleasantly set in a relatively quiet street opposite a beautiful and ancient church and in amongst York's many attractions yet easily accessible from the train station and by car.

The area is renowned for its burgeoning food and drink scene and there is never a shortage of lovely places to eat and drink, without the late night pubs and clubs associated with other parts of the city.

We are within the city walls, less than half a mile from York Minster and a 5 minute stroll from Parliament Street and the Shambles Market which represents the main centre of York and plays host to York's many events and specialist markets throughout the year.

We are ideally placed to stroll around England's most complete ancient city walls. Take in spectacular panoramic views from the top of Clifford's Tower or spend time in the many fascinating and child-friendly museums and galleries such as the National Railway Museum, Jorvic Viking Centre and the Castle Museum to name but a few.

We are closer than many York hotels to the city's vibrant mix of independent boutiques and high street shops making life easier if you want to drop bags off between rounds of shopping and a whole host wonderful cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs are just around the corner.

For an evening of music, comedy, theatre or ballet we are close to York Barbican Events Centre and the National Centre for Early Music or the Grand Opera House York and not far from York Theatre Royal. We are also extremely handy as a place to stay in York for events and weddings, particularly at The Merchant Adventurer's Hall, and for visits to the University of York.

How to find us...

ind hotels in York

When visiting hotels in York city centre such as the St Denys, there is no need to bring your car. The city is well served by rail links being around 2 hours away from London and 2.5 hours from Edinburgh.

The hotel is less than a mile's walk or 5 minute taxi drive from York Train Station.

The nearest airport is Leeds/Bradford which, like Manchester, Newcastle and London airports are all conveniently linked to York by rail.

If you come by car, the best route to approach the hotel is via the A1079 Hull Road, on the East of the city. You can access this road from the the North or South bound A64 outer ring road and it is signed 'York Hull 1079'. When you have exited the A64, at the traffic lights/roundabout you will need to take the A1079 York road. If you approach from the A64 South you will need to stay in the left lane and turn left and if you approach from the A64 North you will need to stay right and turn right.

Once you have picked up the A1079 York road, you just need to continue straight into the city centre and you will eventually see the city walls and Walmgate Bar at some traffic lights ahead. You will need to be in the right hand lane in order to cross straight over the intersection and through the City Walls into Walmgate. From here, St Denys Road is the 4th road on the left, and the hotel is situated on the left opposite the church. The drop off/pick up area is to the right of the hotel.

If you approach from any other direction, please be aware that St Denys Road itself is one way and accessible only from Walmgate. Also please be aware there are no left/right turns from the inner ring road through the bar walls into Walmgate and so you must approach from the A1079 straight ahead. If you miss this approach you can still access Walmgate via Navigation Road (almost opposite Waitrose) or alternatively by passing the York Central Travelodge on Picaddilly. If you use satnav, our postcode is YO1 9QD.
